  • Feudalism in Late Medieval England

Most people are familiar with some of the titles used in Medieval England. Lord, Knight, Peasant. The first time I read a medieval biography, a pattern became clear: every man is called either Thomas, Richard, Henry or John (hence the phrase Tom, Dick and Harry). Their titles keep them apart and so not only did it make me chuckle but made me realise I’d benefit from understanding the titles’ responsibilities, rarity, status and of course power.

And so with that came questions about the feudal pyramid:

    • what were their responsibilities?
    • how rare were their titles?
    • how did they obtain their title?

First of all it’s important to know feudalism was a social, political and economic system centered around the holding and leasing of land or fiefs.

Below I’ll take you through the levels and take you through my though process along the way.

    Feudalpyramid-2

    Nobles

    1. The King Sovereign

    role:

    • owned all land
    • granted fiefs to nobles in exchange for loyatly, military service and taxes
    • ultimate law-giver and judge

    rarity:

    • obviously one at a time.
    1. Dukes Highest rank of nobility

    role:

    • governed very large terrritories often near borders or unstable regions
    • commanded armies
    • often royal relatives or extremelt trusted magnates

    rarity:

    • 0-5 at once
    1. Marquess Border Lords

    role:

    • governed strategic borders, especially scotland and wales.
    • responsible for defense, fortifications, and military readiness

    rarity:

    • rarer than dukess
    • term was used late and sparingly
    1. Earls Counts

    role:

    • ruled counties/earldoms
    • collected taxes
    • raised troops
    • administered justice locally

    rarity

    • 10-20 at a time
    • core medieval elite
    1. Viscounts Deputies / Assistants Originally "vice-counts" (deputies of counts/earls)

    role:

    • administrative and judicial functions

    rarity:

    • almost nonexistent in medieval england
    • more common in France
    • becomes meaning in later periods
    1. Barons Backbone of the nobility

    role:

    • held land directly fromt the King
    • owed military service i.e. knights, troops
    • attended the king’s council (parliament-ish)
    • enforced law on their estates

    rarity:

    • dozens to hundreds
    • wide variation in wealth and power
    feudal-pyramid.jpg

It’s key to know titles did not mean power. what mattered more was how much land you controlled. where, how many armed men you could raise and your relationship with the king. That being said the pyramid might show a structured overview however it was more a network of negotiated power.

As I learned about the lives of the Earls in [[Henry V]]’s life I wondered how one would and could become one.

Becoming and Earl comes down to land, bloodlines and royal favour. The short answer is you either get appointed Earal by the King or you inherit the title.

    • Creation by the king
      • The King would create and earldon and grant it to a man who had proven milkitary service, politically loyal, already held substantial land, and was unsefil to control a region.
      • this was done by formal grant or ceremonial rezognition
      • the title of a new ear was always from the crown.
    • Inheritance
      • inheritance was the most usual pathway
      • passed on from father to eldest son (of course)
      • if there was no mail heir it could get complicated. the title coule become extinct, fall into abeyance, or would be regranted by the king.
      • good news: although women could rarely inherit the title of earl, they could inherit the land itself.

Fun fact: the word sandwich comes from the Earl of Sandwich who around 1762 wanted to eat some cold meats at his desk however working on political papers and therefore asked for his meal to be put between two pieces of bread to avoid greasing his hands. This lead to others ordering "the same as Sandwich"

  • Being an indie brand in an Amazon world

What it takes in economic storms and in unprecedented times. A bunch of shit we learned the hard way at BBUC and the magic of being an independent brand with no overlords when the world demands flexibility.

Golden Rule: Do Cool Shit That People Like

Being small means you don’t need to play by corporate rules. No spreadsheet forecast is going to tell you what actually excites people. The best filter we had at BBUC was simple: does it feel right in your gut? If it does, chances are your community will get it too.

That’s why indie brands win where giants stumble. While big players are stuck in super sale cycles, overproduction, and chasing minimum inventory KPIs for next year’s sales forecast, you can do something different: create things that serve a purpose. Cool shit made with heart always resonates.

Making a Mutually Beneficial Relationship with Suppliers

Being a small brand doesn’t mean you have less leverage, it means you can use different leverage. We learned that being easy and nice goes further than volume. Remembering a sales rep’s summer plans, hopping on quick video calls, or sending a genuine thank you isn’t fluff – it builds trust. When you can’t order a million units, you can still be their favourite client.

And that trust is what lets you push them. Challenge their skills with rubber prints, crazy colours, sharper stitching details, or actually-good taste for once (client services, ammarite?). That’s when suppliers start taking pride in the work that you’ve pushed them to make.

High-Touch Customer Service as a Competitive Advantage

The audacity of returns will never cease to amaze you, but you can turn it into a positive if you kill them with kindness. That meant answering nicely, keeping it human and making the process as painless as possible. A thoughtful email or quick solution goes further than a discount code with a link.

Meanwhile, the giants hand out long return windows, say yes to everything, and then toss the products straight in the trash. Hooray, great for everyone, especially Mother Earth. That’s the difference: high-touch service builds loyalty and it doesn’t leave a trail of waste behind.

    Customer Happiness Best Practices (aside)

Kindness is free. When the giant company says YES you can say YES AND…

    • hand-written notes
    • hidden gifties
    • legit size advice
    • order pre-flight customisations
    • easter eggs in b2b orders

Order Light and Make it Tight

Sales forecasts are unpredictable and fashion only makes it harder. Trends shift fast while manufacturers move slow but don’t fret, even though there’s a couple “gotchas”’ in supply management you can learn to see them coming.

Every manufacturer has their own style of work, so be prepared: product codes get mixed up, invoices don’t match, or the material you thought was secured suddenly isn’t. It’s not (always) failure, it’s just the reality of long supply chains. What matters is how you respond.

We learned to keep our orders lean and our systems tight. Sublimation , which relies on semi-plasticised paper to transfer those razor-sharp, high-fidelity prints, was our darling technique until the Ukraine war wiped out Europe’s main paper supply and we all had limited capacity to fight over. That’s when being your manufacturer’s bestie comes in hand

    Own Your Weird. Stay Human.

Being small means you can have quirks that the giants can’t replicate. Speak your truth, connect with the people, trust your audience is smart enough to get inside jokes. Be relentlessly authentic and your community with love you more for it.
